Others who got state aid as children are unable to get help once they turn 18. Connecticut wants to change that.
2) Many creative and artistic people throughout the ages have battled depression, and modern young people — such as Kurt Cobain and Zach Braff — are no exception. Canadian singer/songwriter Matthew Good calls his bipolar disorder “a blessing and a curse.”
3) In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy last April, many colleges and universities re-evaluated their mental-health services and considered what to do about students who could pose a threat to others. At what point should a student leave school? How can professors and administrators be trained to better help students with mental illness? Can colleges be held liable if a student commits suicide?
Several students at Eastern Illinois University say they were unfairly targeted and kicked out of school because of their health.
Karen Bower, an attorney with the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, says,
“The message is that we only want people here who don’t have physical or mental impairments. And if you have one, you’d better have it under control at all times.”
Meanwhile, students may be embarrassed or not know where to get help.
