Lying to your mental-health professional is bad enough - but in recent weeks, at least one patient went even further.
A man in New York City hacked a psychiatrist to death at her office in a gruesome attack with a meat cleaver. He also seriously wounded the woman’ s colleague, although police aren’t sure if the suspect was a patient.
Earlier, John M. Grohol at World of Psychology told of another counselor being killed during a house call.
Such attacks, while thankfully rare, are tragic and remind us of the risks therapists take to help others, particularly those who work outside of hospitals and other more-secure settings (as that AP/Fox News story reported).
Patients with severe mental illness can’t always control their behavior. But sometimes, safety measures such as security cameras aren’t enough.
Let’s hope there’s no need for more Ten Commandments references in the weeks ahead.
